Salters’ Hall: A Quiet Corner of London’s Living History

Nestled in the historic heart of the City of London, Salters’ Hall stands as a testament to centuries of trade, tradition, and transformation. As the headquarters of the Worshipful Company of Salters, one of the Great Twelve Livery Companies, the Hall has witnessed the city’s evolution from medieval marketplace to global financial capital. This is the breakthrough of events.

The Worshipful Company of Salters: A Brief Background

Formally incorporated by Royal Charter in 1394, the Worshipful Company of Salters originally regulated the trade of salt, a vital commodity in medieval life. At the time, salt was not just used to season food but also played a crucial role in preservation, medicine, and industry.

Over time, like many livery companies, the Salters transitioned from a trade guild into a charitable and educational institution, while retaining its ceremonial and civic roles within the City of London.

A Hall Rebuilt Through Time

Salters’ Hall has not always stood where it does today — nor has it always looked the same.

  • The original hall was located near Bread Street, but it was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
  • A second hall was built shortly after, only to be severely damaged during the Second World War in the Blitz.
  • The current hall, located on Fore Street, was designed by the noted architect Sir Basil Spence and opened in 1976. It is one of the few examples of Brutalist architecture among the City’s livery halls.

In 2016, the hall underwent a major refurbishment, updating its interiors while preserving its bold and uncompromising concrete aesthetic.

A Home for Science and Education

Today, Salters’ Hall is more than a meeting place for the Company. It also houses the Salters’ Institute, a charitable foundation dedicated to promoting science education, particularly in chemistry.

The Institute was founded in 1918, originally to support servicemen returning from the First World War with training in chemical industries. Since then, it has evolved into a key supporter of science teaching across the UK, offering:

  • Salters’ Chemistry Camps
  • Annual Chemistry Prizes
  • Curriculum resources for teachers
  • Collaborative projects with schools and universities Living Tradition

Salters’ Hall continues to serve as a venue for formal dinners, lectures, and civic ceremonies, maintaining the customs of the livery while embracing a modern mission. It is a space where history meets innovation — and where London’s medieval guild legacy lives on in a 21st-century form.

Visiting Salters’ Hall

Although not generally open to the public, Salters’ Hall occasionally participates in events such as Open House London, offering rare glimpses inside one of the City’s most unique architectural and historical spaces.

For those walking nearby, the building’s stark lines and textured concrete facade make it a striking contrast to the glass towers that dominate London’s skyline — a subtle reminder of the city’s layered and evolving story.
